Before Betting On 1,000 Guineas

A busy weekend of Classic and Triple Crown action rounds off on Sunday when the 1,000 Guineas is staged at Newmarket. Fillies aged three will be involved in this race, with a distance of a mile covered. This race was first staged in 1814, and there is a purse of £500,000 up for grabs. It is the middle leg of the Fillies’ Triple Crown, with the Oaks and St Leger taking place later in the year.

Aidan O’Brien will be chasing an eighth win in the race this year, and he will saddle Ylang Ylang. She was excellent over course and distance last year to hold off Shuwari in the G1 Fillies’ Mile, which was her third win in five starts. This runner stays the distance well, and previous course form is a massive bonus.

Fallen Angel will likely go off favorite for Karl Burke after winning on three from four starts. She was excellent when winning over the July Course at Newmarket in August, before following up with a dominant showing at the Curragh over seven furlongs. Based on ratings, she is the one to beat.

Dance Sequence has already returned to action this season for the team of William Buick and Charlie Appleby, but she was only second over seven furlongs at Newmarket. But, she has won on two from three starts at the track. Ramatuelle is the big French hope this weekend, as this daughter of Justify has won three from six. Likely needed the return run at Deauville last month, and more should be expected on better ground.

A wide-open renewal of the 1,000 Guineas is set for this weekend, and cases can be made for many. However, we are very keen on the chances of Ramatuelle, who has a fitness edge over her rivals and should come on from her recent effort. Porta Fortuna is also hard to dismiss after holding her own in Grade One company throughout last season.
