How much does last week’s 31-30 home loss to South Carolina sting for the Clemson Tigers now? With USC’s loss in the PAC 12 Championship Game on Friday night, it’s likely going to be 11-1 Ohio State that gets the #4 playoff spot since their only loss was to #2 Michigan. Clemson can get to 11-2 and be a conference champion with a win over North Carolina, but they still have two really bad losses on their resume.
Before Betting on the ACC Championship Game
While Clemson can complain all they want about Ohio State getting into the playoffs even though they didn’t play in a conference championship game, the Tigers first have to worry about beating an explosive Tar Heels team. UNC has the #8 passing attack in the game (320.8 ypg) but they’re limping into the ACC Championship Game with losses to Georgia Tech (21-17) and NC State (30-27) the last two times out.
Clemson has nobody to blame but themselves if (when) they miss out on the CFP. DJ Uiagelelei was just 8/29 passing against the Gamecocks with a mere 99 yards. UNC scores 37.1 ppg, so Clemson could easily get blown out here if Uiagelelei struggles like that again.
Despite their struggles on offense, Clemson still has a top 10 rushing defense which means North Carolina QB Drake Maye is going to have to be on to beat this Tigers squad. Maye is just a redshirt freshman in his first full year starting, and he looks like he’s hitting a wall late in the season throwing for 202 and 233 yards the last two games after tossing for 280+ in all 10 games prior.

ACC Championship Game Prediction & Pick
One of the big advantages Clemson has in this spot is familiarity, as this is the 9th time Dabo Swinney’s Tigers have made the ACC Championship Game while it’s just the second time for North Carolina and first since 2015. That being said there is absolutely nothing to give you confidence behind Uiagelelei leading Clemson to cover the -7.5 here.
Pick: North Carolina +7.5
