You would think that Texas Tech (7-5) has the instant advantage playing in the TaxAct “Texas Bowl” but it’s actually Ole Miss (8-4) that is right around a field goal favorite according to the offshore sportsbooks. The Rebels did have a solid start beginning the year 8-1 and getting up to #11 before their 30-24 loss to Alabama but the Red Raiders also won three straight to close out the year while Mississippi lost their last three.
Before Betting on the Texas Bowl
Ole Miss was all about throwing the football in last year’s 10-3 season that culminated in a 21-7 loss to Baylor in the Sugar Bowl. Matt Corral threw for 3,339 yards with 20 TDs and 4 INTs last year which got him picked in the 3rd round of the NFL draft by Carolina. This year the Rebels are more about the rushing game, ranking 3rd best in the nation at 261.6 ypg.
Quinshon Judkins was a bona fide workhorse this season, running for 1,476 yards which was 8th best in the country while also adding 16 TDs. Make no mistake though Ole Miss can still move the ball through the air, with QB Jaxson Dart throwing for 448 earlier in the year against Vanderbilt and finishing the season with 7 TDs to 1 INT the last four games.
Texas Tech was 7-5 in Joey McGuire’s first year as head coach, beating Kansas, Iowa State, and Oklahoma to finish the regular season on a 3-game win streak. TTU’s leading passer this year was Donovan Smith, but he’s entered the transfer protocol which means Tyler Shough – who led the Red Raiders to the three straight wins to close out the year – gets the nod once again. Shough threw for 436 yards in the season ending 51-48 victory over Oklahoma so he has a big upside.

Texas Bowl Prediction & Pick
The ability of Ole Miss to run the football is the difference maker for Wednesday’s game, with the only thing working against the Rebels is perhaps disappointment after playing in an NY6 game last season. Either way, Mississippi giving -3.5 seems like a gift.
Pick: Ole Miss -3.5
