Australia meets Greece in group A’s final round. Greece needs a win to stay in the combination for the next stage, and the same goes for the Aussies, who will seal the spot in a knockout phase with a triumph here.

After beating Spain pretty confidently in the opening match of the Olympics, 92-80, Australia had a rough landing against Canada in the following event. The boys from Down Under lost 93-83, looking rather confused and helpless against Shai and his crew, not being able to adjust to the pace in that one.

The Aussies had 18 turnovers, possibly their biggest problem against the previous rivals. Canada’s very rigid and hard defense turned out to be an enigma for Australia’s backcourt. Josh Giddey had 19 points with seven boards and six assists, Jock Landale had 16 and 12 boards, and Patty Mills scored eight buckets.

Things aren’t good for Greece, who has three losses in a row, counting the one against Serbia in the test period. They’ve opened the Games with a defeat against Canada, 86-79, before posting another tough failure, this time against the veteran Spanish unit, 84-77.

Greece didn’t defend the three-point line well, as the Spaniards stuffed 16 threes, breaking the morale of their opponents, who had a double-digit lead early on. Giannis scored 27 points and had 11 boards, but overall, he often placed his team in problems, being the offensive option, even in moments when there was no need for such action.

The Australian team is much more diverse on both ends of the floor, with several attacking options and a faster ball movement. Greeks are all-in on Giannis, and that won’t bring them a win here.
