Steph Curry has a broken hand which is the only thing that could make this nightmare start to the season by the Golden State Warriors worse.
Steph Curry Breaks his Left Hand
The bad news is that Steph Curry broke his hand. The good news is it’s his non shooting hand even though the injury will obviously cause him to miss some time. The Warriors have looked terrible with Curry in the lineup so it’s hard to say how bad this team will be without him. What we do know is that they will likely be closer to a lotter team without him that not.
Even with Steph Curry in the Lineup They Aren’t Good
This might be a blessing in disguise for this team. Even with Curry, they were looking hopeless. Without him, they can sit back, take their time and make some crucial decisions. Before the injury, the Warriors were getting smashed by the Suns. In their three losses so far this season, they’ve been down by 30+ points in each one. That is what they used to do to opponents so it’s kind of ironic to see it happen to them.
At some point, head coach Steve Kerr is going to have to address this lack of defense. As of right now, the Warriors are ranked dead last in defensive rating. That has nothing to do with Steph Curry getting injured. If anything, they played better defense once he went out. Not to lay all of the blame on him, it’s been a total team failure.
It Might be D’Angelo Russell Time
Nobody knows how long D’Angelo Russell will be on the Warriors but it looks like he will get the chance to lead this team. Draymond Green is still around but at his point its safe to say that Draymond is almost a non factor on offense. Even with Kevin Durant gone and Klay Thompson out injured, he’s only raised his scoring average from 7.6 last year to 10.3 which isn’t going to solve the Warriors problems. Green isn’t the only one struggling either. Before breaking his hand, Steph Curry was struggling big time offensively, only making 24% of his threes so far this season.
That means the burden of the scoring load falls on the shoulders of D’Angelo Russell. Russell is the only competent, reliable scorer left on the roster. He’s also an excellent playmaker so expect the offense to run through him and Draymond Green. Although Green isn’t a reliable scorer he is a very good playmaker so he can help facilitate in that respect.
What’s Next for Curry and the Warriors?
It’s hard to know what the Warriors will do next. If they continue to lose at this rate, which it seems very likely considering how they’ve looked so far, there is no reason to rush Steph Curry back. They’ve already hinted that Klay Thompson probably won’t play this season. After this start, there’s no way we see Thompson.
A broken hand isn’t enough to keep Curry out for the year but there is definitely no reason for him to come back until he is 100% good to go. Even when he is, they might want to consider holding him out just a little bit longer.
