49ers Stumble Without Christian McCaffrey
Statistically, the 49ers appear fine offensively and defensively. Despite that, the absence of do-everything back Christian McCaffrey is hindering them, even with Jordan Mason doing a fine job in his stead.
They are dropping games they have no business losing. They blew double-digit, second-half leads to the Rams and Cardinals and lost both games. QB Brock Purdy has done little to escape the perception that he is a solid game manager who coach Kyle Shanahan was keen on replacing with Tom Brady two years ago. He threw two INTs in Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals.
A key factor to bear in mind is that San Francisco’s kicker, Jake Moody, is injured with a high ankle sprain and has been replaced by journeyman Matthew Wright. Wright has been with four different teams in four years. He has a powerful leg, but the raucous atmosphere in Seattle could negatively affect him.
Seahawks Have Faltered After Fast Start
The Seahawks have now lost two straight after winning their first three games. They remain in 1st place in the NFC West, but when looking closer at their wins and losses, there is much to be concerned about.
Seattle defeated three shaky teams by winning against Denver, New England, and Miami. They then lost to the top contender Lions in a 42-29 shootout and followed that up with a loss to the New York Giants.
Geno Smith is currently leading the NFL in completions, attempts, yards, and yards per game. Their running game has been questionable, but the return of Kenneth Walker III has already made a huge impact. They also have tremendous firepower on offense with WRs D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
49ers vs Seahawks Prediction
Seattle is always a tough proposition when they are at home and Purdy has been making key errors for the 49ers. San Francisco has had trouble closing out games this season. Smith’s mobility will be a challenge and it is difficult to shut down Seattle’s offense with their weapons. San Francisco’s kicking issue is not to be ignored. We like the Seahawks here.
