The Baltimore Orioles (7-4) are off to a hot start again in 2024 and on Thursday they go for a sweep of the division rival Boston Red Sox (7-5). It may be early in the season, but the AL East looks like it’s going to be a gauntlet yet again so divisional wins are important even in April.

Boston should be going for a series win on Thursday but they couldn’t not hold on to a 5-0 lead on Wednesday, allowing Baltimore to score three runs in the 6th and four in the 7th as the Orioles picked up a 7-5 victory. That’s still a better showing for the Sox than Tuesday’s 7-1 loss, where Boston’s bullpen again imploded allowing four runs in the 7th inning and later.
The Orioles will go for the sweep behind Grayson Rodriguez (2-0, 2.19 ERA) who has been sharp in his first two outings of the year. Rodriguez gave up 1 ER to the Angels in his first start of the season and followed that up with 6.1 IP of 2 ER ball in a win at Pittsburgh last Friday. Rodriguez has also been the benefactor of some solid run support, as Baltimore has scored a total of 18 runs in his two starts.
Boston will attempt to salvage the series behind Garrett Whitlock (1-0, 0.96). The right-hander has allowed only one run total in his two starts this year, but he did struggle a bit with command on Saturday throwing 101 pitches and serving up four walks in a 2-1 loss to the Angels.

Rodriguez is solid on the mound for Baltimore and will most likely deliver another quality start on Thursday. Whitlock has had a great start to the year for Boston as well, and both of his outings to begin 2024 were on the road so he should be even more dialed in at home.
