Shakur Stevenson will make his first defense of the WBC lightweight title in early July, as he comes up against Artem Harutyunyan in New Jersey. The reigning champion will be the commanding favorite to successfully defend the top prize in the lightweight division.
Before Betting On Artem Harutyunyan vs Shakur Stevenson
There are few more exciting boxers in the U.S. at this moment than Shakur Stevenson. The American has brushed through every opponent that he has come through during his professional career, and is a three-weight world champion across the super featherweight and lightweight divisions.
After dominating the featherweight division, he moved into the super featherweight tier in 2021 when winning the WBO title against Jeremiah Nakathila in Las Vegas. He made a dominant defense of the title against Jamel Herring, before adding the WBC and Ring titles with a professional display against Oscar Valdez.
Stevenson decided it was time for a new challenge last year, and embarked on winning the WBC lightweight title. A bout against Frank Martin was set, before his opponent withdrew from negotiations to set up a showdown against Edwin De Los Santos, which Stevenson won commandingly.
Harutyunyan will present a fresh challenge for the champion, with the German-representing boxer having won bronze in the light welterweight division at the 2016 Olympics. He comes into this fight looking for a response after suffering a first professional defeat at the hands of Frank Martin last July. However, he has explosive qualities that could pose questions of Stevenson after winning seven of his 13 bouts within the distance.
