The Orioles and Yankees look like they’ll be in a dog fight for the top of the AL East the rest of the Summer. Baltimore (71-50) is currently 1/2 a game back from New York and although Boston is 7.5 games back from the division leaders, they are 2 GB from the second wild card spot so this is an important 4-game weekend set for both clubs.

The first pitcher that gets an opportunity to turn things around for the Sox is Thursday starter Nick Pivetta (5-7, 4.44 ERA). Pivetta has had some trouble giving up the long ball lately, allowing 6 HRs in his last three starts. He got especially rocked in Colorado – as most pitchers do – giving up 7ER and 10 hits in just 2.2 IP on July 24. This is the first time Pivetta faces Baltimore this season, but the Orioles roster has just a .203 collective average against the Boston starter.
The Orioles are doing impressive things this season, that includes going 5-1 against the Red Sox while scoring at least 6 runs in each of those victories. Baltimore has a +90 run differential on the year paced by Anthony Santander whose 36 HRs are 3rd in MLB. Zach Eflin (8-7, 3.83) starts the series opener for Baltimore in his fourth outing since being acquired from Tampa Bay. Eflin has been especially sharp the last two, surrendering just 2 ER over 13.1 IP for a 1.36 ERA in August.
