The loss actually dropped New York to 1/2 a game behind the Orioles in the AL East, so they’ll try to get back on track Wednesday.

Cleveland scored just four total runs in the three game sweep in Milwaukee, but their offense returned to form on Tuesday with 12 hits in the 9-5 win at Yankee Stadium. Make no mistake the game did go into extra innings tied 3-3, but a 6-run 12th inning has to give the Guardians some momentum for the rest of the series.

Cleveland stranded 20 runners in Tuesday’s win, so Guardians starter Joey Cantillo (0-2, 6.23 ERA) hopes that more of those ducks on the pond get converted to runs on Wednesday night. The left-hander has allowed 3ER in each of his three appearances in 2024, but he has pitched deeper in every outing going 5.2 IP on Friday in a loss to the Twins.

New York sends Nestor Cortes (6-10, 4.20 ERA) to the mound in game two as they try to even up the series and stay toe to toe with Baltimore in the AL East. Cortes threw 7.0 IP of shutout ball in his last outing, but that was against the White Sox who have the worst offense in baseball. Cortes allowed 5+ ER in three of his previous five outings, so he’s still got some work to do.
