The Mets vs Diamondbacks series is critical for the NL wild card race, with Arizona currently holding the top spot while New York sits 3 GB from the final position. The Mets did well to increase their positioning on Tuesday, winning the opener 8-3.

Before Betting on August 28 Mets vs Diamondbacks

New York’s 8-3 win in the opener snapped a six game winning streak from the Diamondbacks. Pete Alonso had a HR in that contest, 1-3 of the Mets batting order went 7-15, and NY had an 8-0 lead by the 6th inning.

Sean Manaea stifled the Arizona bats on Tuesday, pitching into the 7th while striking out 11. He ran into trouble in that 7th frame allowing HRs to Lourdes Gurriel, Jr. and Corbin Carroll, but by then he had an 8-run lead to play with. Luis Severino (9-6, 3.84 ERA) looks for a third straight solid start, throwing a complete game shutout on August 17 vs Miami and following that up with 1 ER allowed at San Diego.

Severino has been great for the Mets the last two, but he also allowed 14 ER in his previous 13.0 IP. Arizona looks to get the bats going combined with another good outing from Eduardo Rodriguez (2-0, 3.94 ERA). The left hander is making just his fourth start of the year after coming back from a shoulder injury, but so far his previous three have all been Diamondbacks wins.

August 28 Mets vs Diamondbacks Prediction & Pick

Rodriguez worked his way up to 100 pitches in his last start so he should be back, and at the same time Severino has only allowed 1 ER over his last 14.0 IP. Even in a game with Arizona’s #1 scoring offense (5.33 runs/game) and the Mets being a top 10 unit this still looks like a pitcher’s duel.

Pick: Under 9
