Bayern Munich defeated Paris Saints Germain, 1-0, and won the Champions League tonight. The only scorer in this match was Kingsley Coman who has a history with the French team.
Coman and Neuer Bring the Title
Kingsley Coman spent 10 years at Parc des Princes, before leaving for Juventus. Almost all he knows was learned in PSG, and after seeing his performance tonight, we might say that the Saints’ youth coaches did an excellent job with the winger.
Coman was more than calm in the 59th minute, when Joshua Kimmich assisted him for a goal, with a cross from outside the box. Bayern’s forward was forgotten on the far post, without any coverage, and in an excellent position for scoring. Of course, such a gift isn’t always desirable.
Apart from this situation, Coman was in the middle of attention much sooner, during the closing stage of the first 45 minutes. It was then when one of PSG’s players brought him down in the box, following an obvious foul. Yet the referee thought that there was no reason for him to award Bayern a penalty.
In the meantime, Manuel Neuer made several unbelievable saves, which pretty much killed the morale of the Saints’ players. He stopped Neymar’s and Mbappe’s shots in the first half, with both of them being from excellent positions.
Neymar was surging from the left and his attempt saw the ball sliding below Neuer’s legs, but the German goalkeeper diverted its path enough to prevent a goal. As for Mbappe, the French striker was alone at some 8 yards, but his shot was weak, and didn’t present any trouble for the veteran.
Meanwhile, Robert Lewandowski hit the post for the Bavarians, during the middle of the first half, once he came up with an excellent idea on how to endanger Navas’ goal. PSG’s goalie, too, had a few solid stops, which could have easily been goals.
We also need to mention that the Parisians were probably damaged for one penalty when Mbappe fell into the box with Kimmich hitting his foot while clearing the ball. It was a controversial situation, but much closer to being the penalty than not.
One of the reasons why the French club lost was Neymar’s terrible performance, as he didn’t contribute at all in this game. Apart from missing an excellent chance, the Brazilian did not organize attacks as expected, often losing the balls, or having bad passes. He did receive a lot of beating, but in the games like these, that was something expected.
Bayern’s Fantastic Year
The Bavarians are the second team besides Barcelona in this century to win the famous Treble. They deserved this without any doubt, confidently riding throughout both domestic competitions and the Champions League. Bayern scored more than four goals per game until tonight, and they had one of the most efficient attacks ever seen in the UCL.
Since Hansi Flick stepped into the scene, Bayern transformed its game from a mediocre to a historical one.
According to the newest odds, they are the biggest favorites for winning the next UCL campaign.
