Breeders’ Cup Challenge action takes place this weekend, as the Bing Crosby Stakes offers a place in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint for the winner. This weekend’s race is the standout contest at Del Mar, and will see a field of horses aged three and over compete over six furlongs.

Before Betting On Bing Crosby Stakes

The Bing Crosby Stakes has been dominated in the previous two years by trainer Mark Glatt. He has trained the winner in each of the previous two years, with jockey Flavien Prat picking up wins in six of the previous seven years. However, Prat doesn’t have a ride this weekend. The connections need to be appreciated ahead of this weekend, as Glatt’s Howbeit is a massive price.

The five-year-old disappointed last time out, as he failed to finish the Oak Tree Sprint Stakes. But strong form in the book at Del Mar shouldn’t be overlooked. Shaaz will be the narrow favorite in the betting for the race this weekend.

Trainer Bob Baffert has won this race a record four times, and this four-year-old deserves respect back at six furlongs. He was third over a mile in the G3 Steve Sexton last time out, but three wins before that start ensure that he is a leading contender.

Drain The Clock and American Theorem are both carrying top weight this weekend, but both are prominent in the betting. The preference out of the two if for Drain The Clock, for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.

The four-year-old enjoyed a steady return to action in the U.S. at Gulfstream at the start of July, as he finished fourth in the G3 Smile Sprint Invitational, but his top form last season, including a win in the G1 Woody Stephens, makes him a very solid contender if back at that level.

This is a wide-open renewal of the Bing Crosby Stakes this weekend. I like the trend of winners from stall seven, which leads me to Letsgetlucky. This four-year-old posted a very solid 109 speed figure when second in the G3 Count Fleet Sprint last time out, and was a winner of an allowance optional claimer at Saratoga in March. He is best priced at +600 with the bookies above.
