The English FA have confirmed that Gareth Southgate has stepped down from his role as manager of the England men’s team.

The 53-year-old has agreed to terminate his contract following defeat in the final of the EUROs against Spain in a game that saw the Three Lions lose 2-1.

The former Middlesbrough defender took charge of England on 28th September 2016 and has since overseen 102 games and averaged 2.08 points per game.

For the departing Southgate, after losing back-to-back EUROs finals, first against Italy on home soil in 2021 and then again against Spain in Germany this year, unfortunately, failure and ‘what could have been’ is what the 53-year-old will be remembered for.

Eddie Howe, Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino are among the betting favorites to succeed Southgate.
