Cam Newton has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals after aggravating a foot injury he sustained in preseason.
Cam Newton Can’t Stay Healthy
Former NFL MVP Cam Newton is having trouble staying on the field these days. The injuries have been piling up over the past few seasons and he has been ruled out of this Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. He had sustained a foot injury in pre season and it appears that he has aggravated the injury.
Newton has not practice all week and Kyle Allen has been named the starter in his place. Newton was seen around the Panthers facility in a walking boot. The timetable for his return is uncertain at the moment. Kyle Allen started the last game of the season but his second career start will be something special for the second year QB. He is an Arizona native. He also knows the Cards rookie QB Kyler Murray having spent time with him at Texas A&M before both transferred.
Newton Could Miss a Few Games
Depending on how Kyle Allen looks this week, Cam Newton might miss a few games. For one the Panthers haven’t given a timetable for his return which leads most to believe he might miss more than one week. He also hasn’t been playing well which could be due to his injury. Whatever the reason is, Cam Newton has not been playing well for a long time.
Even though he seems to always be hurt lately, he doesn’t miss many games. This is only the seventh time he’s missed a start since being drafted in 2011. While that Is commendable on his part, it could be part of the reason for his poor play over the last few seasons. Since winning league MVP, Cam Newton has been a very inconsistent quarterback. If he has been playing through injury like he did last year with his shoulder, at this point in his career that’s a bad move.
He needs to get himself healthy again so he can find some consistency in his game. If the Panthers and Newton ever hope to get back to the Super Bowl, they need Cam Newton 100% healthy.
When Healthy Newton Has Looked Good
Since Norv Turner became the offensive coordinator for the Panthers, Cam Newton has been at his best when healthy. Turner was a Super Bowl winning offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys teams of the early 90’s and he was a very good head coach.
The Panthers 0-2 start puts them in a tough spot but luckily for them, some of their division rivals are struggling too. The New Orleans Saints will be without franchise QB Drew Brees for almost two months. Meanwhile in Atlanta, Matt Ryan has not looked his best. There’s also the improved play of the Bucs under Bruce Arians and Todd Bowles.
If the Bucs are in the conversation in the NFC South, the Panthers should still be optimistic about their chances as well. They have a very strong nucleus of veteran players. Cam Newton can’t afford to miss to many games especially If they lose this Sunday to Arizona.
