Liverpool’s Route To The Final
This may not be the grand stage that Liverpool would have been hoping to play at this weekend, as they were hoping to be coming into the Champions League final to complete a quadruple. However, a treble success would still be a major honor for Jurgen Klopp and his Reds side, as the German looks to mastermind the club to a second Champions League success.
The Reds have been tested throughout the competition to this point, and that started all the way back in the group stages. However, they eased through with six wins from six against Atletico Madrid, Porto and AC Milan. But, Liverpool got the job done early in the round of 16, as their 2-0 win at the San Siro against Inter Milan meant that they had one foot in the next round.
Despite a 1-0 defeat at Anfield in the return leg, confidence remained high. The Reds easily got past Benfica in the quarterfinals, but gave themselves a big challenge in the second leg of the semi-finals against Villarreal, as they squandered a 2-0 first leg lead in the first 45 minutes in Spain. However, they struck back in excellent fashion to eventually win 3-2 to set up this exciting final.
Real Madrid’s Route to The Final
Real Madrid are chasing a record-extending 14th Champions League title this season, and their route to the final would have needed to be seen to be believed. The Spanish giants were shockingly beaten by Sheriff in their first home game in the competition this year. But, they still managed to top their group above Inter Milan. In the round of 16, they came up against PSG, and despite being played off the park for the best part of two legs. However, they still edged through following a 3-2 win in the second leg.
Madrid made a much more convincing start to the second leg against Chelsea, as Karim Benzema scored a stunning hat-trick to win 3-1. The second leg was much tough, but they scored the clinching goal in the extra time period.
Their tie against Manchester City in the semi-finals will go down as one of the all-time best fixtures. They were beaten 4-3 at the Etihad in the first leg, and looked to be heading out as City struck with 20 minutes remaining. However, two goals in injury time forced extra time, before Benzema was once again the hero from the penalty spot.
Liverpool vs Real Madrid Prediction
This should be a showdown for the ages, and cases can be made for both teams. Liverpool are winless in their previous five against Real, which includes their defeat in the 2018 final. Therefore, there’s no doubt Real are the value in the betting, as they have passed every test put in front of them this season, and the Reds looked leggy in their final Premier League fixture of the season. However, it may go to extra-time, so a bet on Real Madrid to lift the trophy would be our play.
