Underdogs covered the number in all three NFL games on the Sunday week 16 slate, and in the case of the Rams and Packers they won outright. That trend doesn’t seem likely to continue as the week wraps up in Monday’s Chargers vs Colts matchup, but that’s what the oddsmakers also want us to think. The Colts are unpredictable on Monday if anything for the simple fact they are starting their third QB of the season with Nick Foles getting the latest crack after the most recent Matt Ryan benching. Ryan has completed less than 60% of his passes the last two games, and has 14 TDs to 13 INTs on the season.
Colts interim coach Jeff Saturday almost had to bench Ryan, as somebody has to be the scapegoat after Indianapolis blew a 33-0 halftime lead last Saturday in a 39-36 defeat to the Vikings. That was the biggest blown lead in NFL history, which doesn’t do a ton for morale heading into Monday night in front of an embarrassed Lucas Oil Stadium fan base.
The Chargers just need to take care of business on Monday night, something they’ve done in winning three of their last four. L.A’s offense has sputtered a bit in beating the Titans 17-14 last week and topping Miami 23-17 in week 14, but those are also solid defensive showings. With the Colts turning to Foles for his first action of the season – while also missing star running back Jonathan Taylor (ankle) it should be another banner night for the LAC defense.
