Conor McGregor will make his return to the octagon at UFC 246. This news shook the world of sports yesterday, and at the moment, Notorious’ comeback is one of the hottest topics on the internet. His opponent will be Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, the veteran who is way past his peak, but still dangerous as we’ve seen that on numerous occasions.
McGregor’s Hidden Agenda
According to most of the experts, Conor was adjusting his return to the ring towards Khabib Nurmagomedov’s fights. The former champion has a plan to have two or maybe even three contests before having a rematch against Khabib. The Russian Eagle will meet Tony Ferguson in April, and after that, the prospects for another match between these two guys will be much better.
Right now, Nurmagomedov, who has 28 straight wins in MMA, doesn’t want to discuss another fight with the Irishman. According to his statements, McGregor needs to prove himself worthy of another chance. Conor was recently visiting Moscow, where he held a press conference calling out Khabib. He even accepted the possibility of fighting in the capital of Russia.
Yet there was no positive response from the other side.
Many experts agree on the fact that McGregor isn’t chasing the financial resources anymore. After his spectacles with Nurmagomedov and especially against Floyd Mayweather Jr, money is not a primary thing for the Notorious.
What About Cerrone?
Cowboy (36-13) is currently in decline. With 36 years of age, and 49 professional fights, he is one of the most experienced individuals in the history of UFC. But also, he is pretty time-worn. His latest two bouts saw him beaten like never before.
At first, it was Tony Ferguson who demolished Cowboy at UFC 238. That was one of the worst beatings in the recent history of the organization. The doctors had to stop the fight at the end of the second round because of a massive hematoma under his eye, which closed it completely.
Three months later, at UFC Fight Night 158, he suffered a first-round knockout to Justin Gaethje and wasn’t looking good at all. Many agree that Cerrone had too many fights throughout her career, and also, the schedule was often pretty tight.
When looking at all the fighters, he is the only one in history with six years in which he had at least four contests. Now that is something which simply had to leave some consequences.
For many, this is the whole catch when talking about McGregor. He got a sounding name, which is not threatening to him or his comeback, or if it is, the prospects of him losing the fight are low.
He makes a big return, earns a win, and is back in the game for challenging Khabib, who will have his own troubles against much serious opponent. What happens next is yet to see. Are these two going to meet immediately, or Khabib demands that Conor wins a couple of more times, we’ll see. Also, there is one more thing. Tony Ferguson seems to be forgotten by the majority of the public, and he too has some plans.
Which might come true, if he upsets Nurmagomedov in April.
