Lewis Hamilton once again proved to be the most dominant F1 driver right now. The Brit would win at the Silverstone today, even though he had an accident in the last lap.
Another Win for Hamilton
This was the 7th time for Hamilton to win at his home and the 87th overall. He is four wins away from the legendary Michael Schumacher, whose record could be broken already this year.
Max Verstappen took the second place on the podium, and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc ended third, after a lucky turn of events. The loser of the day is Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, who lost the second position in the finish.
After a usual scenario seen so many times this season, Hamilton was first, Bottas second with all the other rivals far behind the Silver Arrows’ duo. Yet, both of them could have ended the race in the last laps, but Hamilton had a bit more luck than his team colleague.
The two of them were cruising towards an easy win once we saw Bottas having a tire incident, that is a burst. He would reach the pit stop but fall down in the standings, eventually finishing 11th.
Hamilton had the same destiny; only he had enormous luck. His tire collapsed in the last lap allowing him to go through the finish line without major consequences. The second lucky thing was the fact that Max Verstappen went into a pit to change his tires and try to set the fastest lap of the race, which would bring him one point.
It turned out to be a catastrophic decision. If the young Dutchman stayed on the track, he would no doubt win this race without any problems. But it seems that the fortune once again smiled on Hamilton.
Just to add, these two guys weren’t the only ones with tire problems, as Carlos Sainz also experienced the same issue, which opened the position for Daniel Ricciardo to end fourth.
Leclerc was third, which was the second podium of the season for Ferrari’s new star. Sebastian Vettel was 10, one place ahead of Bottas, and the two had an interesting battle for position in the last lap, with the German rebuffing Fin’s attacks.
Lando Norris, Sebastian Ocon, Pierre Gasly, Alexander Albon, and Lance Stroll were between the fifth and the ninth position.
Hamilton and Mercedes Dominating the Championship
Lewis tops the drivers’ standings with 88 points, thirty more than the second-placed Bottas whose jinx today cost him a lot. Verstappen is third with 52, and Lando Norris fourth with 36. Leclerc comes next with 33, Albon has 26, and Perez sits seventh with 22. Stroll and Ricciardo are behind, with 20 each.
When looking at the constructors’ championship, Mercedes is far ahead, with 146 points, with Red Bull following the Silver Arrows with almost tice as fewer points, 78. McLaren Renault has 51, and Ferrari 43, one more than Racing Point Mercedes. Renault collected 32, and Alphatauri Honda 13.
The next race would also take place at the Silverstone circuit, next week, and that is F1’s 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.
