Before Betting on Cubs vs Cardinals Aug 2
With the trade deadline looming at 6PM ET on Tuesday, it will be interesting to see if the St. Louis Cardinals can put together a package to acquire Juan Soto from Washington as they’ve been rumored to the past couple weeks. Obviously Soto wouldn’t be able to join the team in time for the Cardinals vs Cubs Aug 2 matchup, but getting him could add an extra air of excitement in the Busch Stadium stands.
The Cubs are likely going to be on the other side of transactions at the deadline, with rumors of Willson Contreras and Ian Happ playing their last game for the team going on for weeks now. Chicago had put together a six game win streak, but dropped three of four on their trip to San Francisco over the weekend.
Even if they can’t land Soto, the Cardinals still have an intimidating lineup that features Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado. It’s good timing for the Cubs though as Goldschmidt and Arenado are both hitting under .200 over the past week. Albert Pujols and others have picked up the slack as St. Louis has won three of their last four.
The Cubs vs Cardinals Aug 2 pitching matchup features Keegan Thompson (8-4, 3.16 ERA) against Adam Wainwright (7-8, 3.28 ERA). Thompson gave up 3 runs over 5.1 IP in his only meeting with the Cardinals this year, a 7-5 Chicago win. Wainwright held the Cubs to 2 ER over 7.0 IP in his only start against the rivals this season, a 5-3 STL win.

The Cubs are 4-1 in their last 5 visits to Busch Stadium including taking two of three in late June. St. Louis is back home for the first time since before the All-Star break though, just wrapping up an 8-game road trip and having Monday idle. Have to lean on the Redbirds here as Goldschmidt and Arenado start to get hot back at home.
