Deontay Wilder is still the undefeated heavyweight champion, after defeating Luis Ortiz with a 7th round KO. The Bronze Bomber showcased why is he one of the most powerful punchers in the history of this sport as he brought down his rival with one strike.
One Hit and It’s Over
It was the late part of the seventh round, with Ortiz pulling all the string in the ring. The Cuban was much better than the champ and was leading according to all the scorecards and the majority of the spectators. But it appeared that he wanted to take down the American and avoid waiting for the end of the bout.
Things were pretty intense, and the two entered several exchanges from which Ortiz came out as a winner. Many believed that his time has finally come to avenge the only defeat in his career, but things didn’t end like that.
Once things settled, near the end of the round, Wilder launched a super right hand, hitting the rival directly into the forehead. Ortiz was on the ground in no time, and after counting, the judge in the ring, Kenny Bayless, stopped the fight. Once again, it was Wilder’s unique gift, which saved him from a certain loss.
And everything pointed that we might see Bronze Bomber’s defeat. Ortiz was excellent, and his gameplan gave results. The Cuban was around Wilder, attacking his midsection, and using every chance to punch his face. It is why he won the opening three rounds. As time went on, those attacks King Kong performed were more and more dangerous, and we saw a few of them, which made Wilder retreat at all costs.
The tension inside MGM Grand Arena was pretty high, with the fans of both fighters trying to make a bigger noise than the others.
It was apparent that the champ wasn’t at his usual level, and that especially goes for his moving in the ring. He was slow and without any characteristic bursts. However, all he needed is one second to close the contest.
Next Target – Tyson Fury
Wilder was pretty straightforward when it came to his future plans. He has only one name on his mind – Tyson Fury.
“Next we have Tyson Fury the rematch next. It’s set to be done in February,” he said.
The rematch between these two champions is something all the fans crave for. The first bout was sensational, with both Fury and Wilder equally close to winning and losing. The Brit was ahead according to the scorecards, but two knockdowns he had to go through brought back Wilder and saved him from a defeat.
Both guys agreed that they need to have another clash, and according to the Bronze Bomber, the time has come for that.
He also added that after that match he wants to unify the titles. Of course, Wilder expects to beat the Gipsy King, and after that clash with the better from Andy Ruiz Jr. vs Anthony Joshua rematch. That bout is set for December 7th in Saudi Arabia.
