The Miami Dolphins (8-8) visit the New York Jets (4-12) with a chance to make the playoffs. They need to beat New York and hope that Kansas City, resting its stars, beats Denver. Miami is likely without quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Our Dolphins vs Jets prediction is for New York to win.

Head-to-head, Miami has the advantage with a record of 61-56-1.

Miami Tries to Beat the Odds and Make the Playoffs

The Dolphins’ playoff hopes looked dead in the middle of the season. They sat at 2-6 and were going nowhere. However, they have won six of eight since then to reach .500. If they beat the Jets, they will be the Chiefs’ biggest fans outside of Missouri, hoping KC’s backups beat the Broncos.

Still, this is not as clear cut as it might seem with a streaking Dolphins team playing the infighting and disastrous Jets. Tua is doubtful with a hip injury. Receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are questionable.

Miami barely beat the Jets in Week 14, coming from behind to tie them late in the game. Then they won in overtime.

NFL veteran backup Tyler Huntley is set to start in Tua’s stead. Huntley played an efficient game in Miami’s Week 17 win over Cleveland, completing 22 of 26 passes for 225 yards and one touchdown. He did not turn the ball over and ran for 52 yards on seven carries.

New York’s defense is no pushover and they will be motivated to sabotage the Dolphins’ playoff push.

New York Can End the Season in a Positive Way

The Aaron Rodgers era (error) will presumably end after Week 18. There’s no pending Black Monday drama since owner Woody Johnson already fired the head coach and general manager during the season. The interview process for a new head coach is ongoing and will get its own blog post analyzing Johnson doing the same things he’s always done and expecting a different result.

That aside, the Jets can win this game. Rodgers can still play and his numbers, while not the Hall of Fame caliber production from his heyday, are solid enough. New York will be without star cornerback Sauce Gardner.

The team managed to embarrass itself (even for them) in the beating they took in Buffalo in Week 17. The Bills could have scored 60 had they wanted to. Even with all these issues, the competitiveness in the quarterback and the veteran players would love to ruin the Dolphins’ season.

Dolphins vs Jets Prediction: New York Disappoints Someone Other Than Their Fans

This is as close to a playoff game as the Jets have come in a decade. They can salvage something from Rodgers’ tenure if they can say, “At least we knocked the Dolphins out of the playoffs.”

And that’s what’s going to happen.
