The UFC 291 headliner is the rematch of two elite lightweights, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. These two guys delivered a show in their previous meeting when Poirier notched a KO win. It’s time for part 2 of their saga.
Before Betting on UFC 291 Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje
Poirier had a flashy bout against Michael Chandler, which he won, forcing the fellow American to tap out. Previously, he met Charles Oliveira, against whom he lost via rear-naked submission in a title bout. This was the second time Poirier lost in a championship match. The previous one was against Khabib.
The Diamond, as the fans call Poirier, had been one of the icons of this class. He met all the top guys, posting 29 wins and seven losses. His trilogy with Conor is one of the most entertaining ever, he also beat Dan Hooker and Max Holloway, among others. Poirier is a strong puncher and a very solid grappler, but above all, extremely strong for this division.
On the other hand, we have arguably the most powerful pair of lightweight fists in the world. Gaethje holds a record of 24 wins and four losses, and 19 of his victories were via KO. At one point, he had four straight KOs, beating Edson Barboza, Cowboy Cerrone, and Tony Ferguson, among others.
The problem for the Highlight is his mediocre grappling. He isn’t at the top level in this area, which presents a problem for him on certain occasions. For example, like Poirier, he too lost twice in the championship events, against the same rivals, and both times via submission.
