Before Betting On Epsom Derby
The Epsom Derby is one of the world’s most famous races, and it has been staged annually since 1780. The field will compete over a distance of one mile and four furlongs in Britain’s richest flat race, with the contest also forming the middle leg of the Triple Crown.
Aidan O’Brien will be chasing a tenth victory in the Group One this weekend, and he has two solid chances at the top of the betting. City of Troy looked to be a potential superstar as a two-year-old, but questions will need to be answered this weekend following his ninth in the G1 1,000 Guineas. Stablemate Los Angeles could be the safer option after winning in fine style on his return to action over a mile and two in the Leopardstown trial.
Godolphin’s hand has been restricted in the race this year due to bad luck on and off track. However, Ancient Wisdom is very challenging to rule out after finishing a fine second on his return to action in the Dante Stakes. The step up in trip looks to favor his running style, and any rain would be a massive advantage.
Ambiente Friendly looked to be a solid Derby hope when winning the Lingfield trial earlier in May, but the decision of owners to put Robert Havlin aboard could be an off-putting factor. Dancing Gemini also has little to find on ratings, and his performance in Group One company in France in May highlights that he should be a leading chance over a mile and four.
Epsom Derby Offshore Odds & Pick
Horse | Odds |
---|---|
City Of Troy | 4.00 |
Los Angeles | 4.50 |
Ancient Wisdom | 5.00 |
Ambiente Friendly | 7.00 |
Dancing Gemini | 12.00 |
Macduff | 15.00 |
City of Troy’s performance in the Guineas means that it is easy to take him on this weekend. Los Angeles looks a reliable contender that will be suited by the longer trip, while Macduff was a fine second on his previous appearance and he could be a dark horse contender to go better at Epsom.
