It is statistically the worst start to a Premier League season in history for Man United.
The pressure on Erik ten Hag continues to increase after an uneventful 0-0 draw at Aston Villa on Sunday. That result means that United are among the lowest scorers in the Premier League, netting just five times in 2024-25.
The Dutchman was assured by INEOS in the summer, and was handed a vote of confidence in the form of a new deal.
However, the stuttering start to the season has shown no signs of stopping, and the latest international break could be regarded as the best time to make a change.
Erik Ten Hag Hanging by Thread
The Dutchman’s long-term future at Old Trafford looks to be resting on a knife edge. BetOnline has priced up the Dutchman to leave the role at -250 before the start of 2025, and he has a +170 chance to lead United into the New Year.
That sentiment is echoed by BetUS, who make ten Hag the -250 favorite to be the first EPL manager fired this season. Russell Martin is the next best in the betting at +350.
The stats make for grim reading for United. Their eight points after seven matches is their lowest return in Premier League history, and their worst start since 1989-90 when finishing 13th in the top-flight.
INEOS Could Turn to a Fan Favorite
Goals have been in short supply for United this term, meaning that the search for a new boss could point to legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy being appointed.
The 48-year-old was appointed as assistant manager in the summer, and his relationship with ten Hag already looks strained after the two were pictured in a heated debate at Villa Park on Sunday.
Van Nistelrooy’s decision to take the number two role at United raised eyebrows as he turned down the opportunity to be the head coach at Championship club Burnley.
The former striker is the current +125 favorite to replace ten Hag. He would bring esteemed managerial success to the role, winning 64% of his matches at PSV in the 2022-23 season.
Gareth Southgate Has Admirers
Gareth Southgate has previous experience working under United Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth, and has been at the top of the managerial betting since leaving his role with England after EURO 2024.
Southgate is currently a +250 chance. However, his appointment would do little to excite United fans, with his only previous managerial experience at club level coming during a three-year stint with Middlesbrough.
During this time, he oversaw the club’s relegation to the Championship in 2008-09.
The Two Thomas’ Touted as Options
Thomas Frank has been a manager linked with the top jobs in England for the last couple of seasons. The Brentford boss has helped maintain their top-flight status, and has an excellent reputation of working with younger stars.
Thomas Tuchel reportedly spoke with United in the summer, but an agreement was never in place.
The German would be a short-term fix, but he boasts an excellent reputation for achieving success wherever he has gone.
That included Champions League success with Chelsea in 2021, and domestic league wins with PSG and Bayern Munich.
