England vs Germany Preview

England Building Momentum

There has been a mixed reaction from the media when it comes to how England have performed throughout the competition to this point. However, it’s hard to be overly negative about the Three Lions, as they have kept three clean sheets and have picked up seven points from a possible nine. The only points that England dropped in the group stage came in a 0-0 draw against Scotland. Many expected a much more entertaining England team this summer, with a wealth of attacking options at the disposal of Gareth Southgate. However, the front line haven’t yet clicked into gear. Harry Kane has only registered one shot on target, while both England goals have been scored by Raheem Sterling.

Southgate’s selection for this game will be ridiculed regardless of who he picks. Jack Grealish has been the name of the lips of every fan throughout the summer, and could be set to keep his place after an impressive outing against the Czech Republic. However, Phil Foden could be recalled, while Sterling looks to be one of the players that Southgate refuses to drop. It will be fascinating to see the team that the manager sends out in this game, but confidence will be high after an impressive start to the competition defensively.

Germany Ride Their Luck

There is no denying that Germany rode their luck to reach the round of 16, as they were ten minutes away from finishing bottom of the ultra-competitive Group F. Hungary shocked the Germans in Munich on Wednesday evening, as they went 1-0 up, before quickly going 2-1 up just seconds after Germany had levelled the scores.

Germany have been both disappointing and fantastic in games during the group stages, which means it is hard to know which team will turn up at Wembley on Tuesday. They were excellent when beating Portugal 4-2 in their second game, but were flat against France on matchday one, and lacklustre against Hungary.

Meetings Between Germany/England

There have been famous meetings between these nations throughout the history of the sport. England famously won their only World Cup against Germany in 1966, while the Germans claimed victory in EURO 96 at Wembley to end the hopes of football coming home. This will be the first competitive meeting between the nations since Germany won 4-1 at the 2010 World Cup. They have also won two of the previous four international friendlies. England’s only win during this period came in March 2016.

England vs Germany Pick

Both England and Germany will be hopeful that they can progress from this tricky fixture. It could be a tense evening at Wembley, and extra time and penalties could be needed. If it goes to the latter, then it would be hard to bet against Germany.
