Merseyside Derby Preview

It has been a tough week in Merseyside for everybody concerned, but this weekend will see the attention turn back to the football field. It will be a welcome distraction for everybody in the local area, as residents have been hit with tighter restrictions due to the coronavirus. However, the pandemic will not be on the minds this weekend of Liverpool nor Everton fans.

Everton have started the season in excellent form, and are the early pacesetters in the top-flight. They have won all four games that they have played in this season, and the signings that have been made over the summer have instantly worked. James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure have all shone for the Toffees this season, but this will be the first big challenge that they have come up against this term.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the most in-form striker in the league so far this season, as he has scored six goals in just four games. He is just under half the total amount of goals that he scored last term. The striker was handed a first England start during the international break after scoring twice for Everton in their recent 4-2 win against Brighton & Hove Albion. He will once again be the man that Liverpool will need to keep quiet.

There is a huge amount of improvement needed by Liverpool, as they were handed an embarrassing defeat in their last league game against Aston Villa. In one of the strangest afternoons in Premier League history, Jurgen Klopp’s side were on the receiving end of a 7-2 defeat. Mohamed Salah scored the two goals for the reigning champions, but there was very little to smile about.

The Reds were abject defensively throughout the match, and now Klopp must find the right players to ensure that they aren’t as bad defensively again in the derby. Alisson could once again be missing for the Reds, which means Adrian will once again be the man inbetween the sticks.

Recent Meetings Between Sides

Everton haven’t won a Merseyside derby in ten years, with Liverpool enjoying huge success against their local rivals. However, the last three meetings at Goodison Park have all ended in 0-0 draws.

Everton vs Liverpool Picks

This will be the biggest indicator so far this season for both of these sides. Everton could emerge from this game as top-four contenders, while the rest of the league could get more confidence that Liverpool’s form is more than a blip. The pick would be for the draw, but it will not be a 0-0 result like the last three meetings at Goodison.
