Serbia enters this game ranked #4 in the world. In last summer’s FIBA World Cup, they finished as the runners-up after losing to Germany in the finals. With similar medal aspirations for this Olympic tournament, Serbia has a brutal task in taking on the United States in their first game. The United States has been on a bit of a decline in FIBA basketball as the global talent pool grows. Their roster features the most NBA talent, which is a double-edged sword. On one hand, no other team has as deep of a roster and as much pure talent. On the other hand, most of their roster is not accustomed to playing together and has several big personalities vying to be the leader. The last couple of NBA Drafts have shown just how much talent has improved internationally. This should be their toughest run at gold yet.

This is one of just two games in the first round that features two teams ranked in the top five. The United States remains ranked #1 and the heavy favorite, but are nowhere near as much of a lock as they were in the past. They fell short of Serbia in the FIBA World Cup last year and didn’t even medal. The roster changed since then, which may help their chances. Serbia thrives in FIBA play and has more experience together as a unit than the United States. They’ll have a good chance of winning.
