A first look at potential fillies that could emerge as Classic contenders in the U.S. next season will be on offer at Del Mar this weekend, as the G1 Del Mar Debutante will be contested over seven furlongs. The potential winner of the race on Saturday could also emerge as a leading chance in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at the start of November.
Before Betting On Del Mar Debutante Stakes
One of the Grade One races to be staged in the U.S. this weekend will come in the form of the G1 Del Mar Debutante. This race will cover a total distance of seven furlongs on the dirt, with the field competing for their share of the $300,000 purse. Bob Baffert has dominated this race throughout history, winning for the tenth time in 2021.
The trainer is well represented this weekend, with two leading chances. Tenma made a striking impression on her debut over five and a half furlongs at Del Mar last month, registering a speed rating of 85 when holding off Mancuso by a neck. Further improvement is likely.
However, Nooni could be his best chance of victory this weekend, with Juan Hernandez taking the ride. The two-year-old has won on each of her two career starts, which included a victory over six furlongs at Del Mar on her previous start when setting a speed figure of 94 in the G3 Sorrento Stakes. The extra distance this weekend appears to suit.
Vodka With A Twist was second in that Grade Three for trainer Philip D’Amato last month, and she once again appears to be a leading contender from a better starting stall. Night Beacon could also be capable of better this weekend after finishing fourth in the G3 Sorrento. Prior to that, she set a respectable speed figure of 86 when winning at Santa Anita.
