Before Betting On Falmouth Stakes

The Falmouth Stakes is the feature on the card at Newmarket on Friday, with fillies and mares competing over a mile on the July Course. It is a prestigious contest to be staged at HQ, with famous winners including Sonic Lady and Soviet Song. Last year’s winner was Nashwa for the John & Thady Gosden yard.

Porta Fortuna is a standout contender in the field this week for trainer Donnacha O’Brien. The three-year-old filly was a strong second at Newmarket in the G1 1,000 Guineas in May, before showcasing her excellent credentials to go one better with a career-best display in the G1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Running Lion represents last year’s winning connections, with Oisin Murphy set to take the ride on the four-year-old. She was a winner over a mile at Royal Ascot last month, beating Laurel by two lengths in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes. A mile is her optimal trip after winning on all four starts over the distance.

A Lilac Rolla brings interesting three-year-old form lines to the table this week after finishing second in the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh in May. That was a career-best display on her first start over a mile, and she holds some solid two-year-old form after besting Opera Singer in August 2023.

Rogue Millennium is one of the more exposed runners this week for the Joseph O’Brien team. The five-year-old has been sent off as the favorite on both of her starts this season, and was last seen finishing fifth behind Running Lion in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes. However, she remains of huge interest based on her best ratings.

I am a huge fan of Porta Fortuna, and she showcased how extremely talented she is in Group One company on her previous start. Another impressive display is likely at Newmarket this week at a track where we know that she runs well.
