A huge weekend of racing action in the United States will be rounded off on Sunday, when one of the key trials for the Breeders’ Cup Classic is staged at Saratoga. The Jockey Club Gold Cup has seen legendary winners such as Cigar, Man o’ War, and Affirmed in the past, but which runner will add their name to the historic roll of honor in New York this weekend?

Before Betting On Jockey Club Gold Cup

One of the most important races on the Saratoga schedule will be staged this weekend, as the Jockey Club Gold Cup will be run over a distance of 1 ¼ miles. The quality of the field has been hindered in recent history due to the importance of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, but there is still likely to be a competitive feel to the Grade One this year, with the winner securing their spot in the race at Del Mar later this season.

A wide-open race is expected this weekend, with seven talented runners going to post. Among those include Todd Pletcher’s Tapit Trice. The one-time Kentucky Derby-favorite returned to the track after an extended break to great effect at the end of July, beating Highland Falls by a dominant five-length margin in the G3 Monmouth Cup. If he is able to follow up this weekend, he could throw his name into the Classic picture.

Kuchar and Highland Falls will both be outsiders in the field after being well beaten by Tapit Trice at Monmouth Park on their previous outings. Meanwhile, Pletcher is also represented by Bright Future on Sunday, who has won on half of his ten career starts. But, the five-year-old will need to put a very disappointing showing in the G1 Whitney behind him if he is to feature this weekend.

Disarm showed potential as a three-year-old last year when taking second in the G1 Travers and fourth in the G1 Kentucky Derby. However, his form hasn’t been at the same level this year, despite a rallying effort when a never-closer fourth in the G1 Whitney on his previous outing.

With Fierceness and City of Troy both putting down their claims for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, it will be the turn of Arthur’s Ride to respond this weekend. He has emerged as one of the top four year olds in the States this year after dominating on his starts in 2024. The most notable of those was a dominant performance when landing the G1 Whitney earlier this month. Tapit Trice and Disarm are our plays in Exactas.
