Pegasus World Cup: Get to Know the Field

Mixto (1)

StatInformation
Trainer/JockeyDoug O’Neill/Frankie Dettori
Form16: 2-2-5
Best Equibase Speed Rating108

Mixto brings a respectable feel to the race this Saturday. He burst onto the scene with a win in the G1 Pacific Classic, but has been below that standard on recent efforts in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic and G3 Native Diver Stakes when finishing outside of the first two. Hard to foresee the upset.

Saudi Crown (2)

StatInformation
Trainer/JockeyBrad Cox/Florent Geroux
Form12: 6-2-1
Best Equibase Speed Rating114

Saudi Crown is one of the most interesting runners this weekend. He can be exciting from the front, evident when winning the G3 Louisiana Stakes at the start of last year. Has the ratings to play a part, but he is typically a hard runner to predict.

Newgrange (3)

StatInformation
Trainer/JockeyJose Francisco D’Angelo/Emisael Jaramillo
Form15: 7-0-4
Best Equibase Speed Rating108

Newgrange makes his first start for new connections this weekend. He is a three-time stakes winner, and his career peaked at this time last year. However, he has lost by ten lengths in Grade One and Grade Two company on his last two efforts. Overlook.

White Abarrio (4)

StatInformation
Trainer/JockeySaffie Joseph/Irad Ortiz Jr
Form19: 8-2-3
Best Equibase Speed Rating122

Former Breeders’ Cup Classic champion White Abarrio has the figures to get involved this weekend. However, he was way below his 2023 standard throughout 2024. Warmed up for this with a seven-furlong showing in the Mr. Prospector Stakes, but very much banking on a return to form at a short price.

Crupi (5)

StatInformation
Trainer/JockeyTodd Pletcher/Luis Saez
Form19: 5-4-5
Best Equibase Speed Rating112

Crupi could be a runner of interest for Exotic players this weekend, as his closing style will be favored if there is a pace-collapse at the top end of the field. However, his win rate offers little confidence, despite the fact that Pletcher trained the winner of the race in 2022.

Stronghold (6)

StatInformation
Trainer/JockeyPhil D’Amato/Antonio Fresu
Form10: 3-6-0
Best Equibase Speed Rating115

Stronghold is more lightly-raced than his rivals, and the California shipper is one of few that offers potential in this field. He was seventh in the Kentucky Derby last year, and has finished second on his last three starts. Stays this trip well after landing the G1 Santa Anita Derby last year.

Steal Sunshine (7)

StatInformation
Trainer/JockeyBobby Dibona/Dylan Davis
Form25: 7-2-7
Best Equibase Speed Rating110

Steal Sunshine is a local runner this weekend, and has won on six of 18 starts at the track. He is a veteran at the Florida track, but it would be a major concern that he has never won around two turns. One to overlook, as the prices would suggest.

Vitality (8)

StatInformation
Trainer/JockeyHarold Ladouceur/Rajiv Maragh
Form12: 2-2-1
Best Equibase Speed Rating99

Vitality will be a huge outsider in the field for the Harold Ladouceur yard on Saturday. He doesn’t have the ratings to get involved in the Pegasus World Cup, and his lack of experience on the dirt is a major red flag at the highest level.

Mystik Dan (9)

StatInformation
Trainer/JockeyKen McPeek/Brian Hernandez Jr
Form10: 3-2-1
Best Equibase Speed Rating110

Mystik Dan was the 2024 Kentucky Derby winner, but has questions to answer this weekend after finishing last of six in the Malibu last month. His form prior to that effort remained strong, finishing a decent second in the Preakness Stakes. Not wise to rule him out of making a return to form now back up in trip.

Skippylongstocking (10)

StatInformation
Trainer/JockeySaffie Joseph/Tyler Gaffalione
Form28: 9-3-5
Best Equibase Speed Rating114

Skippylongstocking is a multiple-time winner in graded company, and potentially comes into the race this weekend with the fewest questions to answer. He excels around two turns, winning five times. However, he has often come up short at the highest level in Grade One company, including in each of the previous two editions of this race. Will need a few to falter.

Locked (11)

StatInformation
Trainer/JockeyTodd Pletcher/John Velazquez
Form6: 4-0-2
Best Equibase Speed Rating113

Locked made an eye-catching return to the track in the Cigar Mile after a year-long break from the track due to injury setbacks. Pletcher will be hoping to make up for lost time this season, and the booking of John Velazquez makes him one to take very seriously now back up in trip.

Power Squeeze (12)

StatInformation
Trainer/JockeyJorge Delgardo/Javier Castellano
Form12: 6-2-1
Best Equibase Speed Rating97

Power Squeeze is the only filly lining up in the race this weekend, and confidence could be gained from her runs against her own sex last season. That included an excellent success in the G1 Alabama Stakes. I expect her to out-run her odds in this trappy race, and is one for the Exotics.

Pegasus World Cup Pick

Locked holds solid claims on his step back up in trip, and he will be fighting fit for the Pletcher team. Power Squeeze and Skippylongstocking are both interesting outsiders to include in Exotics.

However, it could be set up for Stronghold. The stalker excels around two turns, and has excellent form over 1 1/8 miles, winning the Santa Anita Derby last year.
