An action-packed Saturday of stakes action at Saratoga gets underway with the G1 Saratoga Derby this weekend. This race has attracted an international field once again this year, with two notable runners from Europe set to dominate the betting. You can find the latest odds and picks here.
Before Betting on Saratoga Derby
The Saratoga Derby was re-established on the horse racing schedule in the U.S. back in 2019, returning to the calendar for the first time since 1906. Horses aged three will be able to compete in the race, which completes a total distance of 1 3/16 miles on the turf at the Spa. European raiders have won two of the last three renewals, and that record could be improved this Saturday.
Diego Velazquez looks an obvious starting point when assessing the leading contenders this weekend for trainer Aidan O’Brien. The three-year-old will have Ryan Moore aboard on Saturday, and he comes into this weekend after producing his best run to date at Leopardstown when beating Tarawa by seven lengths to win the G3 Meld Stakes.
However, Charlie Appleby has recent winning form in the Saratoga Derby, as his stable will be represented by Legend of Time on Saturday. The three-year-old has been campaigned overseas this term, and comes into the weekend after a decent third in the G1 Belmont Derby. He could be set to go one better at the Spa.
The leading American hope this weekend is White Palomino for trainer Chad Brown. The three-year-old was a close second behind Legend of Time in the G2 Pennine Ridge Stakes in May, before finishing ahead of the European runner when claiming second spot behind Tikari in the G1 Belmont Derby last month.
Saratoga Derby Odds & Picks
Horse | Odds |
---|---|
Diego Velazquez | +200 |
Cugino | +300 |
Legend Of Time | +350 |
Deterministic | +600 |
White Palomino | +800 |
Cugino is an impressive newcomer at this level, while Legend of Time and White Palomino both hold graded form on U.S. turf. However, Diego Velazquez brings some high quality figures to the table this weekend, and should be hard to beat if anywhere near his peak form.
