One of the biggest races of the season in the United States will be staged at Saratoga this weekend, as the midsummer derby will see a field of top three-year-olds compete over 1 ¼ miles. There will be a lot of clues for the Breeders’ Cup Classic on offer in the Travers Stakes, but which runner will come out on top?

Before Betting On Travers Stakes

The Travers Stakes is one of the most important races of the season in the United States, and this year’s contest looks an exciting contest. A total distance of 1 ¼ miles will be covered by the field at Saratoga on Saturday, with recent winners of the race including Essential Quality, Epicenter, and Arcangelo.

History beckons for Thorpedo Anna on Saturday, as the three-year-old bids to become the first filly to win the Travers in more than a century. She has been the dominant force in her own division this term, winning on all four starts, which included notable Grade One victories in the Kentucky Oaks and Coaching Club American Oaks.

Chad Brown will hold two leading chances in the Travers this weekend, including Derby runner-up Sierra Leone. He is yet to win since her G1 Blue Grass success, and was last seen finishing second behind the re-opposing Fierceness in the G2 Jim Dandy. He could have questions to answer this weekend, despite the market support.

Fierceness bounced back to form with the success in the Jim Dandy, with that being his first start since claiming 15th in the Derby. However, he is unlikely to have as easy of a ride from the front in this company. Dornoch holds pressing claims following his victories in the G1 Belmont Stakes and G1 Haskell Stakes. Interestingly, he will still likely be overlooked in the betting.

The race of the season in the U.S. will present an opportunity for a horse to come forward with Classic claims. The betting for the Breeders’ Cup race has already been shaken up following City of Troy’s win in the Juddmonte International, but America’s crop of three-year-olds will have the opportunity to respond on Saturday.

Dornoch has certainly got clear form claims, but Thorpedo Anna appears to be the best bet in the race. History awaits for the filly, and she could prove just how good she is against the boys at Saratoga.
