One of the most challenging handicaps of the year to predict in the United Kingdom and Ireland will be staged on Saturday, as the Ebor Handicap will be contested over a mile and five. It is the richest flat handicap in Europe, with a purse of £500,000 up for grabs.

Epic Poet will likely head the betting this weekend following a staying on effort when fifth of 20 in the John Smith’s Handicap at York last month, but the fact that he is untested over this trip would be a concern. Queenstown represents the all-conquering Aidan O’Brien yard, and he is guaranteed to stay the distance following his second behind Kyprios in the G3 Levmoss Stakes.

However, I’m always more interested in jumps horses that are taking on this flat assignment. The narrow preference is for one-time Triumph favorite, Burdett Road, for James Owen. The four-year-old returned to the flat last month with a creditable fifth in the John Guest Racing Handicap. Second choice is Not So Sleepy, who was last seen staying on for fourth over a mile and four at Epsom in June.

The City of York Stakes is a Group Two staged this weekend, with the field competing over a distance of seven furlongs. Kinross has dominated the race in each of the last two years under Frankie Dettori, and the Ralph Beckett-runner will be a prominent contender once again this year.

The seven-year-old is without a win this year, and was last seen being beaten by five lengths by Audience in the G2 Lennox Stakes. However, he thrives over this course and distance, meaning despite his age, he remains of huge interest. Lake Forest could be the emerging star in this race for trainer William Haggas. He is sure to thrive over seven furlongs after staying on four sixth behind Elite Status in the G3 Hackwood Stakes last month.

However, Audience sets the clear standard this weekend, and has a clear advantage over his rivals based on official ratings. The five-year-old has looked better than ever this year, including when last seen thumping the G2 Lennox field to win by four lengths.
