One of the best races of the week at the Ebor Festival comes in the form of the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes. This race is for horses aged two and older, with a total distance of five furlongs being covered. Live in The Dream won the race for the team of Sean Kirrane and Adam West last season, but the five-year-old could have his work cut out on Friday.

This week’s contest is all about the showdown between Asfoora and Big Evs, with the top two from the G2 Qatar Stakes renewing their rivalry. Big Evs got the better of his older rival on that day, but there will be a swing in the weights to favor Asfoora this weekend.

It should be a fascinating rematch, with Asfoora previously coming out on top when the stars met in the G1 King Charles III Stakes. However, the preference remains for Big Evs, who has previous winning experience over course and distance after landing the Westow Stakes in May.

The graded action gets underway on Day Three with the G2 Lonsdale Cup on Friday. This contest is competed over two miles, with some impressive stayers previously landing the spoils. Stradivarius was the dominant force in this race between 2018 and 2021, winning the contest on three occasions.

The betting for the race this week will be headed by Aidan O’Brien’s Point Lonsdale. The three-year-old is clear on ratings, and was an impressive winner over a mile and five earlier in the season when beating Arrest by six lengths to land the G3 Ormonde Stakes.

However, I’m a big fan of Vauban for Willie Mullins, and he could take the beating in this company now back up to two miles. He produced a decent enough effort to take third in the G2 Curragh Cup in July, while his fourth behind Kyprios in the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot could be the best piece of form on show. In-form Align The Stars could be one to note in receipt of weight from all market rivals.
