The offshore sportsbooks aren’t expecting a ton of points on Saturday when the Hawkeyes (4-4) meet the Boilermakers (5-3) as the Iowa vs Purdue matchup has a total of under 40. That’s somewhat surprising considering the Boilermakers can throw the ball all over the field (13th in passing) but the combination of a good Hawkeyes defense and an extremely bad Iowa offense has that number making sense.
Before Betting on Iowa vs Purdue
Purdue is the favorite at home on Saturday and they’re trying to bounce back from having a four game win streak broken in a 35-24 loss to Wisconsin two weeks ago. The Boilermakers are coming off their bye so they should be rested for a tough, physical Iowa squad.
The Hawkeyes had an offensive anomaly last week in a 33-13 win over Northwestern as they had scored 30 points total in the three games prior. Iowa threw for 220 yards and ran for 173 and they could be able to do that again against a Purdue team that allowed very similar numbers in their loss to the Badgers.
Iowa’s defense is a top 10 unit even after being torched 54-10 against Ohio State a couple weeks ago. The Buckeyes’ C.J. Stroud threw for 286 yards and 4 TDs in that game so stopping Aidan O’Connell and the Purdue passing attack (313.1 ypg) is priority #1 for the Hawks.
This is a revenge game for Iowa as last year they had climbed to #2 in the rankings – the highest in school history – before being upset 24-7 at home by Purdue. O’Connell had 375 yards passing against this vaunted Hawkeyes defense that crushed Iowa’s 6-0 start.
