Jadeveon Clowney may be leaving the Houston Texans in a trade to the Seattle Seahawks as both teams look close to an agreement.

Jadeveon Clowney Might Be on the Move

The contract situation involving Jadeveon Clowney may be resolved soon. The outcome is not what most were expecting but it doesn’t come as a total surprise either. The Houston Texans look to have reached an agreement to trade Jadeveon Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks.

It’s a move that makes sense for both parties. Clowney is looking to get paid and it doesn’t appear that the Texans are willing do that. With so many holes in their offensive line and secondary, they need to spend their money elsewhere. Since being drafted, Jadeveon Clowney had an up and down start to his career as he fought through injuries. He has been healthy for the last two seasons where he has played at a Pro Bowl level for the Texans.

His incredible versatility will be very useful in Pete Carroll’s system. The Seahawks are a team that has always been defensive minded and they add one of the best defensive players in the league to an already talented unit.

Jadeveon Clowney Will Be Expected to Help This Pass Rush

Although Clowney has shown great versatility, he has not been a dominant pass rusher. The Seahawks will hope that he can improve on those numbers but no matter what he makes this defense better. They are already good at stopping the run and with the addition of Clowney, they are going to be elite. This is probably the best linebacker group in the league and Clowney could see some snaps playing in that position as well.

The Seahawks did sign Ezekiel Ansah after losing Frank Clark to the Kansas City Chiefs. Clark will be missed but they have done a good job by picking up Ansah and now Clowney. They will also benefit from the return of Jarren Reed after he serves his six game suspension.

Why Are the Texans Trading Clowney?

Jadeveon Clowney chose not to sign a franchise tender which was worth $15.9 million. Last year he played on his 5th year option that paid him $13.3 million. With his injury history, Clowney is looking for a long term deal to secure his future. In the eyes of the Seahawks, he has been healthy enough for the past two years to take flyer to see what they have. Clowney is not eligible to sign a long term deal with the Seahawks until after this season because of how late this deal is taking place. Clearly Clowney is agreeing to this move since he would have to sign his franchise tender in order for the deal to go through.

What are the Houston Texans Getting in Return?

The Houston Texans will receive linebackers Barkevious Mingo and Jacob Martin as part of the deal. Mingo offers similar attributes as Clowney in the sense that he can play both linebacker and defensive end. Of course he isn’t on the same level talent wise but there aren’t too many players in the league that are. The Seahawks will also receive a 2020 third round pick as part of the trade for Jadeveon Clowney.
