Jets Try to End 4-Game Losing Streak

The Jets have been perhaps the most disappointing team in the NFL. Not only have they lost 10 of their 13 games, but they have done so in an embarrassing manner on and off the field.

They are in disarray with rampant questions regarding their football operations, coaching staff, quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ future, and whether owner Woody Johnson will receive another ambassadorship from President-elect Donald J. Trump and leave the team in someone else’s hands.

Now, they are trying to salvage some dignity in this lost season.

Their last three losses summarized their struggles. They allowed Indianapolis quarterback Anthony Richardson to engineer a late drive to beat them 28-27. Then they blew a 14-point lead to Seattle. Finally, they surrendered a game-tying field goal to Miami with six seconds left before losing in overtime without touching the ball on offense.

This week, Rodgers suggested that the Jets might truly be cursed.

New York has underachieved or been terrible in just about every aspect of the game except for pass defense. Against Jacksonville, playing with Mac Jones at quarterback instead of Trevor Lawrence, they probably don’t need to worry about an aerial attack. Still, it’s the Jets, so anything is possible.

The Jaguars Have Issues of Their Own

In Week 14, Jacksonville broke a five-game losing streak by defeating Tennessee. It was not a dominating performance, winning 10-6.

The Jaguars have not been as overt in their dysfunction as the Jets, but they have been a mess in their own right. Head coach Doug Pederson is unlikely to return and substantial changes are in the offing. Star quarterback Lawrence was lost for the season after a late hit by Houston’s Azzez Al-Shaair. Their offense has been pared down significantly with Jones under center.

On the field, Jacksonville has been even worse than New York, ranked in the bottom eight in every significant category from points scored, points allowed, takeaway differential, passing, and rushing on both sides of the ball.

Jones has extensive experience against New York from his time as New England’s starting quarterback. He has a 5-0 career record and a 95.3 passer rating.

Jets vs Jaguars Prediction: New York Wins the Battle of the Dregs

Both teams would likely be better off losing to get a higher draft pick, but someone has to win unless they manage to tie — and don’t put it past them.

Rodgers played well against Miami. New York will break its losing streak and win reasonably easily.
