A couple of sub .500 teams meet up to kick off a weekend series at Minute Maid Park when the Tigers (33-35) visit the Astros (31-38). In years past Houston would have been gigantic favorites in this matchup, but offshore oddsmakers have the line split nearly right down the middle for Friday night’s opener.

Houston returns home after a 3-3 road trip, but they’ve had their share of issues on their own field this season with just a 17-18 record. things started off great on the road swing scoring 20 total runs in taking two of three from the Angels, but they were held to 3 runs in three straight games against the Giants, losing two out of three.
Detroit is in the opposite situation, heading on the road for the first time after an extremely disappointing 2-4 home stand that kicked off with a 10-0 loss to the Brewers. Detroit has scored at least 4 runs in five straight games, so at least they are getting a consistent offensive performance since the big defeat to Milwaukee.
If Detroit can get another 4+ runs on Friday it should be enough for starter Tarik Skubal who has been dominant this season with an 8-1 record (4th) and a miniscule 1.92 ERA (3rd). Skubal has allowed an ER or less in four of his last five outings, not something a somewhat slumping Houston offense wants to square off against.
The Astros counter Skubal with Hunter Brown (2-5, 5.58 ERA) which gives Detroit a huge pitching advantage in this matchup. To be fair Brown was very shaky to start the season with an 11.84 ERA in April, but he’s calmed down a bit giving up 3ER over 12.0 IP in two June outings.
