Kevin Durant expressed his feelings about his time with Golden St and had some less than flattering things to say about the experience.
Kevin Durant Takes Shots at G.S
All NBA forward Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets sat down for an interview with the Wall Street Journal. As he often does, he touched on a number of topics and his feelings about past experiences. He spoke about everyone from the Golden St Warriors to his time in OKC.
Although he did not directly insult anyone, his comments were not exactly flattering either. As a result, there has been a certain amount of backlash about his comments. In defense of Kevin Durant, he was only answering the questions posed to him as honestly as possible.
Durant Did Not Feel All Like Part of the Team
Although Kevin Durant didn’t say he had any personal issues with anyone on the Warriors, he didn’t feel like he was totally part of the team. His reason for feeling like that is that the rest of the core group of players on the team were drafted by the Warriors so they have a bond that he can’t really be a part of.
While what he is saying makes sense in theory, what did he expect? He went to a team that organically grew from not being contenders to one of the great championship teams in league history. Anyone that comes in after the fact is bound to be on the outside looking in to some extent. It also goes deeper than that. If Durant was role player that came onto that same squad, it would be easier to find a role in that group. Instead Durant came as one of the best players in the world who they all of a sudden had to defer to. Add to that the fact he was their rival during the time they built their championship team and that can make for an odd dynamic.
Durant Criticized the Offense in G.S
This one is very strange coming from Kevin Durant. While he did say that the Warriors motion offense was great, he also added that sometimes in difficult moments, you just need to play ISO (one on one) ball and get a basket. While that isn’t exactly a controversial statement coming from one of the best scorers in league history, it’s a bit confusing.
Durant specifically left Oklahoma City because of the fact that they play too much ISO ball. While he may not have said that explicitly, he definitely implied it when he first arrived in Golden St and was asked about their offense. After you win two championships playing that way, now you say that they should have played more ISO? Kevin Durant needs to make up his mind because this doesn’t make a lot of sense coming from him.
He Says That He Will Never Go Back to OKC
Durant mentioned that he will never go back to OKC. He said that he had plans to perhaps return one day but after the way he has been treated since he left, he wants nothing to do with the organization. These comments are hardly surprising but need to be taken with a grain of salt.
First of all, him saying he planned to go back to OKC does not make it true. While we can’t know what’s in his head, what was the point of bringing that up. He could have just declined to answer the question but instead chose to burn that bridge down to the ground. Kevin Durant won’t play for the Brooklyn Nets until next season but he is still very much in the news with these comments.
