Leonard Fournette, the superstar of the Jacksonville Jaguars, is trying to recruit Cam Newton to come to join him in Florida.
Fournette Believes Newton Would be Perfect Fit for the Jags
The prolific running back believes that having Newton would be very productive for his team. He revealed his thoughts about Jags signing Super Cam on social media, before explaining it more detailed on ESPN’s First Take.
“Cam went to the Super Bowl,” Fournette said, adding that his suggestion about landing the former MVP to Jacksonville isn’t an act of disrespect towards Gardner Minshew. According to the running back, all this is because he wants to improve the overall quality of the team.
Talks about Jags’ QB situation have been filling the headlines for a long time. At first, the team brought Nick Foles before the start of the previous season, handing him and four-year $88 million deal, which turned out to be a massive bust. Foles would suffer a vicious injury already in the first game, and that pretty much ruined his entire campaign. A rookie at the time, Minshew, jumped in and amazed all the Jaguars’ fans setting numerous franchise records for a newbie in the league. He would post 3.271 yards, 21 TD passes, and six interceptions, with the passer rating of 91.2.
The team recently traded Foles to the Chicago Bears, leaving Minshew as the only QB, and ever since, we hear various speculations. Some say that head coach Dough Marrone plans to make him a starter, others that Marrone believes he is still young for that role, etc.
One thing is sure, Jacksonville’s HC wants to bring the competition for Minshew, and he stated that on several occasions. Now, would that be a college QB, because Jags have the 8th overall pick, or a player from the market, we don’t know.
It wouldn’t be wise for the Jags to waste such a high selection on another passer once they have a talented one in the team now, and that is probably the logic applied by Fournette in this case.
Newton’s Be or Not to Be
The first overall pick from the 2011 NFL Draft and the player who made this organization one of the most dominant in the NFC during the mid-2010s, was released on March 24. For him, it was a massive blow, and the entire situation hurt the player.
Prior to the release, there was a tension between Newton and the organization, with the player accusing certain heads of the franchise for lying about his status.
There weren’t any sides interested in trading for the QB, and this free agency is critical for him. He has to find a proper team, the one which would provide him enough space to regain his form and show his incredible skillset. If that goes well, Newton will have the time and the opportunity to make one more big contract. Otherwise, we might see Super Cam as the backup for some young star.
