There were few surprises in round 6 of La Liga BBVA action as all of the favorites took care of business with Real Madrid moving top of the league.
Inconsistency the Them in La Liga BBVA
More than any other year in recent memory, it seems like it’s anyone’s year in La Liga BBVA. Real Madrid currently sit top of the league despite rarely looking their best. That serves as the best indicator of how inconsistent the top sided have been to start the season.
Atletico Madrid sit in 2nd while Barcelona sit in fifth place after losing Lionel Messi after just one half. Valencia who are the other team competing in the Champions League sit way back in 13th and have all sorts of problems of their own.
Real Madrid Hope to Right the Ship
As good as it must feel to be top of the league, Real Madrid know that they are from the finished article. They way they were dismantled in the Champions League by PSG exposed a lot of the weaknesses in this squad. Since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, they have had to rely on a collection of goal scorers which has had mixed results. During Ronaldo’s time in Madrid, Karim Benzema was accused by many fans of not scoring enough.
Against Osasuna, Real Madrid fans got a glimpse of not only their possible future, but perhaps Brazil’s as well. Teenagers Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo both scored in a 2-0 victory. Real Madrid paid a lot of money for the pair and it must be encouraging to see such immediate return on their investment. There are a lot of things that still need tweaking in the Spanish capital but the youngsters from Brazil appear to have a bright future in La Liga BBVA.
Atletico Take Care of Business
Atletico got back on track as they helped themselves to a 2-0 victory over Mallorca. Atletico had only managed to gain one point in their previous two La Liga BBVA fixtures. Diego Simeone has a young squad with some new faces so a few bumps in the road were to be expected.
With things in perspective they have actually started off very well all things considered. The match against Osasuna saw young Portuguese star Joao Felix continue his strong start to the season. Atletico broke the bank to bring him to Madrid and he has shown that he has all the ability to become a world class player in the near future. It looks like Simeone’s men might just have what it takes to challenge the leaders.
Barcelona Lose Messi Again
Lionel Messi only lasted one half on his return to the Barcelona starting lineup. He was substituted at halftime for Ousmane Dembele. It appears he suffered a groin injury and could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines. He has not played 90 minutes for the Catalans this season and that looks like it could still be a long way away after this latest set back. His team did enough in the first half to see out the win against Villareal. All eyes will be on Ernesto Valverde as the shaky start to the season has many questioning his job security.
