Barcelona’s season could be in big trouble as Lionel Messi suffers another injury setback this season as he limps off with an apparent groin injury.
Lionel Messi Injures His Groin
Another blow to Barcelona’s title hopes comes in the form of a Lionel Messi groin injury. The Argentinian superstar has not been able to stay healthy this season. He was making his first start of the season and had to be substituted at half time. He was replaced in the match by Ousmane Dembele.
Lionel Messi had just recently recovered from a calf problem he suffered in pre season. The mounting injuries have to be a concern for the player and the club. They have not started the season well without their superstar. They really have not looked good anytime he has been out for the past few seasons since Neymar left for Paris. Even when he is completely healthy, he is counted on to not only create the chances but finish them off as well. How they cope with him moving forward remains to be seen.
Barcelona Hold On Without Messi
In this match against Villareal, Lionel Messi’s team was able to hold on without him. They managed to score twice in the first half to hold on for a 2-1 victory. They can’t afford to drop anymore points to start the season. Luckily for them their league rivals haven’t exactly been consistent themselves. Real Madrid has looked shaky to say the least. Atletico have started off strong but they have shown signs that they aren’t completely the finished article as yet. Simeone’s men are still trying to find their feet after so many changes.
Messi’s injuries Bad News for Argentina
When it comes to playing for the Argentina national team, Messi has not had a great time of late. Not only have they not been able to win international tournaments, lately they have looked lost. His team had a great run of three straight international tournament finals starting with the World Cup.
Since then the national team has been an utter mess. With these injuries pilling up, Messi can’t possible be available to play for the Argentina National Team over the coming months. That could be a blessing in disguise as it will force others to step up. It could also turn out to be a complete disaster as well. Only time will tell.
Barcelona’s Hopes Rest on Messi’s Health
If Barcelona hope to achieve their goals, they will need Lionel Messi to be healthy. It’s very hard to see them winning the Champions League or La Liga BBVA without him. He is one of the best players to ever play so that should be obvious.
Ernesto Valverde must be feeling the heat. He has not shown that he is capable of winning without Messi in the team but he will have no choice now. His squad has the talent so it’s up to the men that are healthy to get the job done will Messi recovers. He has put in enough work over his Barcelona career that they owe him at least that much.
