In the closing game of the 27th round of the English Premier League, Liverpool defeated West Ham and won their 26th win of the season. The final result was 3-2 for the home team.
City’s Record Tied
The Reds won their 18th straight win in the EPL, and reached Manchester City’s record from 2017. This was also Liverpool’s 21st victory at Anfield, which is one of the best stretches in the history of the club.
Klopp’s side needs only 12 points to secure the EPL title, and the way they play, it won’t be too big of a deal.
The game against the Hammers was more than interesting, as Liverpool trailed in the second half, and won after a massive rally. But to start from the beginning.
After only nine minutes of play, Wijnaldum scored following Alexander-Arnold’s assist. It seemed that the Reds would notch down another pretty convincing result in their favor. By the way, this was AA’s 24ths assist, the most since the start of the last season, while the next one on the list is Kevin De Bruyne with 18.
However, three minutes later, Diop leveled the score after a corner. It was an unpleasant surprise for the home team, but then again, it was early for any calculations and fears.
Liverpool starter pressuring the rivals from all sorts of angles. Van Dijk had an excellent chance in the 40th minute, but the ball struck the crossbar. The result at the halftime stayed the same.
Pablo Fornals, who arrived in West Ham as one of the club’s biggest transfers ever, and one of the most talented Spanish midfielders netted the second goal for the guests from London, nine minutes after the start of the second half.
The Reds had to shift into a higher gear after that, and they did it pretty quickly. Liverpool equalized in the 68th minute, through Mohamed Salah. Though, it needs to be said that the Egyptian forward had massive help from Lukas Fabianski, West Ham’s goalkeeper, who allowed an embarrassing goal.
Sadio Mane ignited the fans at Anfield in the 81st minute, after Arnold-Alexander’s assist. The Senegalese added one more hit until the end of the game, but it was disallowed due to the offside. West Ham also had one chance to score, but Alisson reacted superbly, preventing that from happening.
Liverpool Near History
Manchester United won the Premiership title in 2001 on April 14th, and that is the earliest trophy-clinching performance of one team. Liverpool can beat that if they continue to play at this pace. Also, do bear in mind that the schedule now and back then is not the same.
Right now, the Reds are first with 79 points, 22 more than Man City, who is second. They are on the pace to create the most impressive season ever, not just in English football, but in general.
Meanwhile, the Hammers are in the relegation zone at the moment, with 24 points. They are ahead of a bitter fight for staying alive in the EPL
