Liverpool vs Manchester City Preview
Reds In Top Form
Liverpool were slightly overlooked when it came to experts giving their title picks for the new season, with many questioning whether they had the depth to compete. However, there is no question should the Reds keep their first eleven fit, then there are very few sides that could finish above them in the league standings. Liverpool have started this new Premier League in excellent form, and already find themselves at the top of the standings. Jurgen Klopp’s side remain the only unbeaten team left in the Premier League, as Chelsea and Manchester United both lost for the first time this term last weekend.
The Reds weren’t able to take complete advantage of that anyway, as they were held on the road by an outstanding Brentford side. The Bees gave everything in that fixture, and deserved the 3-3 draw that they got. However, Liverpool turned on the style in the Champions League this week, with a huge 5-1 win against Porto.
City In Menacing Position
Manchester City are primed to go top of the Premier League this weekend, as a victory would be enough to go top of the table for the first time this term. It is a difficult run of fixtures for Pep Guardiola’s side, as they came up against Chelsea last weekend. However, they made no mistake in showcasing their dominance in that fixture, as they eased to a 1-0 win. The Blues were lucky that it was only one, as City missed countless great opportunities to extend that advantage.
However, City came undone in their second big task of the week, as they were beaten by PSG in Paris on Tuesday night. City lacked firepower throughout that fixture, and while they had a lot of the ball, they never looked like testing a resilient PSG defence. Lionel Messi’s first goal for his new goal, and his seventh against a side managed by Guardiola, rounded off the win with 15 minutes remaining.
Recent Meetings
City have had a good record against Liverpool in recent years, winning three of the previous five league games between the sides. Liverpool’s only win against City in the past three years came in November 2019. City were dominant in this fixture last season, beating Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield in February.
Liverpool vs Manchester City Pick
Liverpool are excellent value in the current odds, and we would not be at all surprised to see them throw down their title challenge with an impressive display against their rivals. Mohamed Salah has been in great form recently, and we wouldn’t look past him scoring the first goal.
