Who Is Luigi Mangione?

Luigi Mangione is a 26-year-old valedictorian at the Gilman School in Baltimore, and he later graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania. Mangione also spent time surfing in Hawaii, but left due to back injuries.

The American had a fine upbringing, and is from a prominent family in the state of Baltimore, with his family owning various businesses, including nursing homes, country clubs, and a radio station.

Health Issues

Mangione suffered from various health issues, which, according to Yahoo, were sparked following his first surfing lesson, which triggered spinal problems. The problems led to Mangione traveling back to the East Coast in 2023 to get surgery on his back.

It was during this period that many close to him began to notice a change in his behavior. Mangione would become a loner of sorts, and was isolated from friends and family. Various reports online have also noted that he went ‘radio silent’ before the incident that led to his arrest.

Mangione’s Arrest

Mangione was arrested on December 9 after being apprehended at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania after an employee recognized him. At the time of his arrest, he was carrying fake IDs, a 3D-printed gun, and a handwritten manifesto expressing his thoughts about corporate America.

The manifesto on his personal is believed to be his motive behind the attack, with many reports indicating that Mangione had a personal vendetta against Brian Thompson due to his issues with the healthcare system in the U.S.

One of the main notes of his manifesto published by Newsweek claims healthcare bosses are ‘parasites’, and mentioned that the U.S. has the ‘most expensive healthcare system’, but ranked 42nd in life expectancy.

The reaction to Mangione’s arrest has been mixed, with some sickened by his actions, while others labeling him a ‘vigilante against corporate excess’.

So much so that social media channels such as X and TikTok have been flooded with conspiracy theories surrounding the case.

At present, the charges against him include murder, as well as several counts of identity fraud. The 26-year-old contested his extradition to New York for trial and has indicated that he will fight all charges against him. His lawyer clarified this, as he claimed that Mangione would plead not guilty.
