Man City face 115 charges for breaching the Premier League’s financial rules between 2009 and 2018.

The Cityzens have strongly denied all the charges and have said their case is supported by a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence”.

The hearing will begin on Monday, 16th September with the final verdict expected in early 2025, and in line with this recent news, bookmakers have released odds on the type of punishment the six-time Premier League champions will be handed, including possible fine, points deduction or even having previously won trophies rescinded.

Man City Charges Explained

We know Man City face 115 charges for breaching the Premier League’s financial rules, but what exactly are those charges?

  • 54 x Failure to provide accurate accounting information between 2009-10 and 2017-18.
  • 14 x Failure to provide accurate player and manager payment details from 2009-10 and 2017-18.
  • 5 x Failure to comply with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules from 2013-14 and 2017-18.
  • 7 x Breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) between 2015-16 and 2017-18.
  • 35 x Failure to cooperate with the Premier League’s internal investigations between December 2018 and February 2023.

Before Betting

While fans wouldn’t be surprised if several of the possible outcomes listed above were to happen, it is very unlikely manager Pep Guardiola will be sentenced to time in prison. The Spaniard’s involvement in any suspected wrongdoing is not clear at this stage, but as an employee of the club, it would be reasonable to assume City’s Saudi ownership are the ones ultimately responsible. Guardiola quitting the club, on the other hand, would be a much more realistic outcome, although BetOnline are not currently offering odds on this happening.

So what is likely? — Well, of course, a heavy fine is likeliest but with the club worth between $4.1 – 5 billion, any financial punishment would be viewed as a ‘win’ for the wealthy English club, therefore, legal decision-makers may be more inclined to apply a points deduction — an outcome that would have considerable sporting consequences.

And while having previously won trophies rescinded and being removed from the Premier League would also have major sporting implications, we think both of these outcomes are probably a bit too strong — especially when City will have the best sports legal defenders money can buy at their disposal.

Man City Charges: Outcome Prediction

Given the nature of the alleged offenses and City’s strong defense, a points deduction (and fine) is our predicted outcome.
