Before Betting On Man o’ War Stakes

The G2 Man o’ War Stakes is one of the first big early season tests for runners on the turf, which has been downgraded this term and staged at Aqueduct. This race is normally competed at Belmont Park, but due to renovations it has a new home for the 2024 edition. This year’s race will also be run over a distance of 1 3/8 miles, with the field competing for a share of the $400,000 purse.

Charlie Appleby has made no secret surrounding his desire to target horses at big U.S. turf pots this season, and he has two likely win contenders this weekend. Nations Pride will be short in the betting, with Frankie Dettori taking the ride on the five-year-old. He has an impressive record in North America, which includes a victory in the G1 Canadian International Stakes last year. Nations Pride also has course form after winning the G3 Jockey Club Derby in 2022.

Silver Knott could boast more interesting claims at the current prices after showing a great turn of foot on his return to action at Keeneland in April when landing the G2 Elkhorn Stakes. He was also solid in two efforts in California at the end of last season when finishing in the money in the G2 Twilight Derby and G1 Hollywood Derby.

Tawny Port could be one of the more interesting contenders for trainer Christophe Clement on Saturday. The five-year-old was highly tried on the dirt before switching to the turf. He should stay this trip well after being narrowly beaten in both the G2 Mac Diarmida and G2 Pan American Stakes already this term.

The Appleby duo are very short in the betting, and it would be little surprise to see them finish first and second on Saturday. However, a chance could be taking on Kertez, who was a strong finisher when getting the better of Tawny Port in the G2 Pan American on his latest start.
