English football resumes this week following the World Cup, as the EFL Cup round of 16 takes place. One of the front-runners for the honour will be in action on Wednesday, as Manchester United welcome Burnley to Old Trafford. But, can the Red Devils book their spot in the quarterfinals?

Before Betting on Manchester United vs Burnley

There is likely to be a host of changes for Manchester United, as they return to domestic action for the first time since the World Cup final. Both Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez will be unavailable after featuring in Sunday’s World Cup final between Argentina and France. United haven’t enjoyed the smoothest of returns to action since December, as they have lost back-to-back friendlies in Spain against Cadiz and Real Betis.

However, it’s likely that Erik ten Hag will be able to call upon some of his more experienced players for this round of 16 clash against Burnley. United will also be looking ahead to their return to Premier League action next Tuesday, as they host Nottingham Forest. But, a trophy would be seen as a massive success for ten Hag in his first season at the Theatre of Dreams.

This will be a good test for Burnley, as they have impressed in the Championship throughout the season. The Clarets currently sit top of the second-tier, and have been in excellent form since returning to action in the middle of December. They have won each of their previous two, which includes a fine success against Middlesbrough in their previous fixture over the weekend.

There is also likely to be a frosty welcome to the Theatre of Dreams for Vincent Kompany, who previously played for United’s arch-rivals Manchester City. But, Burnley will still be outsiders, as they look for a first victory against United since January 2020.

This should be an entertaining return to action for United, as they come up against a Burnley team that are likely to be sharper. However, United has an excellent record against the Clarets, and we would be surprised to see anything other than a home win.
